The Darkstar was designed by the Navy to fly to achieve Mach 10, but Chester Cain decided to cancel the program to fund drone projects because the Darkstar aircraft had fellen short of its contract threshold. Maverick wanted to save the program, and once in the cockpit, he proved that the Darkstar could achieve Mach 10. In true Maverick fashion, he decided to push the aircraft beyond its limits.
